Concept
Project Reflecting Taiwan highlights the abundant cultural legacy and identity of Taiwan. Via international cultural exchange between Sweden and Taiwan, the Curious Chamber Players are excited to discover what intriguing sounds we can uncover from the noises of Taipei streets, aroma of the night market, resonance of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and flavor of oolong tea!
Collaborating with Taiwan based concert arranger One Litre Sound and composers Wei Chien Lin, Chi Hsia Lai, and Chin Hsien Chung, the Curious Chamber Players seek to showcase the elegance of Taiwanese culture and history through our Taiwanese sound objects!

Program
Due to the large scale program and the complexity of the setup, we suggest either splitting the complete program into two concerts, or choosing only 4 - 5 works for one single concert.

For past projects and concerts, go to:
Wei Chien LIN: Ki-ik (2023)
for 5 Taiwanese object players
Through the use of objects from the Taiwanese tea ceremony, children's toys, and bamboo baskets, Lin explores the distinctive sound world of Taiwanese symbolism through amplification and effect pedals.
Chi Hsia LAI: remake: reflecting in three ways (2023)
for 4 object players
By combining unique sounds of discarded items from SevenEleven, small torches, cicada like waldteufels, and self-made amplified instrument, Lai expresses her perspective and affection for her homeland.
Chin Hsien CHUNG: ji, fleeting passage (2023)
for fl, cl, perc, pno, obj, vln, cond.
Childhood memory is deeply expressive. The objects from our upbringing evoke thoughts of special people, places, and moments. Chung's heartwarming piece invites us to connect with her nostalgic recollections from childhood.
Malin BÅNG: Sustinere (2023)
for picc, bcc, perc, guit, vln
Bång's work explores various plants utilised by the inhabitants of Taiwan since thousands of years as her musical instruments. Taiwanese cinnamon, millet, rattan palm tree, elephant's ear, and taro root represent a sustainable relationship with Taiwan's nature, which continues to serve as a crucial foundation for both the present and future.
Rei MUNAKATA: Shinshin (2023)
for fl, 3perc, guit, vln
Munakata was inspired by the religious procession of Goddess Mazu, Taiwanese pop idol Jody Chiang, hot sticky summer night, Longshan temple, bamboo fans and massage ball pens found in the market of Taichung.
Wei Chien LIN: Silenced tumult (2020/2023)
for perc, pno, springboard, vln, 2 megaphone players
What constitutes information? How do we convey information to others? Lin uses a range of instruments, percussions, objects, and megaphones to delve into the essence of communication. The intense gestural music represents both the strength and fragility of language and words.
